Inaugural Post
Welcome to the inaugural blog post of FarmerDan. My goal is to post timeless information that provides value. What I write about will be dictated by the environment, requests from readers, my own wild monkey brain, etcetera.
I am a 34-year-old, fourth generation farmer. I would consider 2020 to be my first real farming season. I have been “farming” on paper since 2006, but this is the first year I have had my head firmly in the game. There have been many tumultuous events that have shaped me and brought me to where I am today. I intend to revisit, reflect, and put fully formed thoughts into words as time progresses.
These are the things I am currently thinking about (in order of priority):
Creating a sustainable farming operation
Shrinking Agronomic Knowledge Gap
Increasing Operational Transparency
Greater Focus on System Building
Self sufficiency
Local Human Relationships
Hydroponics
Outdoor Gardening
Process Automation
Water
Electricity
Considering and experimenting with alternative income stream ideas
Writing
Building digital products to simplify and spread specific knowledge I have built over past 15 years
I welcome and encourage questions, comments, ideas, thoughtful experiments to run and polite disagreement.
Until next time,
Daniel John, aka FarmerDan
